Revving Up Navigation: Apple Maps Integrates EV Range & Battery Charge Data for Porsche Taycan, with One Small Caveat

0

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers need to know if they have enough battery charge to reach their destination, especially on long trips. EV manufacturers are updating their navigation systems to provide range and charging information along with directions. However, smartphone apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze offer more advanced and regularly updated mapping features. While it’s possible to manually calculate charging stops and plan your own route, it takes time and can be inconvenient and uncertain for most drivers.

Apple Maps EV Routing integrates real-time range and battery percentage data from your car into its directions. It considers factors like elevation changes to suggest charging stops along your route, but it requires Apple CarPlay. If your battery charge gets too low, Apple Maps will guide you to the nearest charging station. The feature was introduced at WWDC 2020 and initially rolled out to the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Now, it’s also available for the Porsche Taycan. To enable this function, you need to download the My Porsche app and follow a few steps on both the app and the Apple Maps app.

Porsche offers a built-in Porsche Charging Planner in every Taycan, which suggests charging stops based on battery estimates, traffic, and speed. With the addition of Apple Maps EV Routing, Taycan owners have more options without leaving Apple CarPlay for navigation directions with charging stops. Porsche Digital’s managing director, Steffen Haug, stated that they listened to customer feedback and wanted to provide flexibility. The integration with Apple Maps, a familiar product to customers, gives them more confidence and options when using their Taycan for daily activities and longer road trips.

There is a significant limitation with Apple Maps EV Routing—it will only be available to customers in the US. This limitation is likely due to Apple Maps lacking sufficient charging station data outside the US. Apple Maps EV Routing is exclusive to Apple Maps, meaning real-time vehicle data won’t be available on Google Maps or Waze. Google Maps, even on Android Auto, doesn’t offer this type of route planning. However, Google provides native Google Maps navigation through the Android Automotive infotainment platform, available on select vehicles with Google services built-in. Currently, in Malaysia, only the Volvo XC40 and C40 EVs offer this feature.

Introducing the Official ChatGPT iOS App: Your AI-Powered Conversational Assistant by OpenAI

0

OpenAI has released an official iOS app for ChatGPT, their popular AI chatbot. The app is now available for iPhone users, allowing them to access ChatGPT on the go. It is a free app without any ads, offering voice input functionality. Initially, the app is limited to users in the United States. With this app, users can ask questions, seek advice, find inspiration, learn, and conduct research without relying on traditional web searches. Given the limitations of Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, and their slow progress in AI, the ChatGPT app could become a preferred choice for users as their mobile assistant. This release could also impact Google, as ChatGPT might attract users away from using Google search, which is the default search engine on Safari for iPhones.

When using the ChatGPT mobile app, your search history from the web interface will be synced across devices for convenience. The app includes Whisper, OpenAI’s speech recognition system, allowing users to input text through voice commands. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can access the advanced features of GPT-4 within the app. Subscribers also receive early access to new features and enjoy faster response times. The ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20 per month and provides access to ChatGPT even during high-demand periods.

The ChatGPT app will be initially launched in the United States and will expand to other countries soon. An Android version of the app is also expected to be released in the future. Rumors about OpenAI working on a mobile app surfaced in February, but the company didn’t comment on it at that time. The launch of the ChatGPT app coincides with other major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook exploring AI technologies. Google and Microsoft have been integrating AI capabilities into their search engines, including a partnership with OpenAI. Accessing ChatGPT directly on mobile, without relying on a search engine or browser, could change how people use their phones for searching and accessing information.

One advantage of OpenAI’s mobile app is that it is ad-free, unlike search apps with integrated AI. OpenAI highlights in its blog post that users can get instant answers without dealing with ads or multiple search results. This subtle statement indirectly criticizes Bing, OpenAI’s partner, for incorporating ads into its AI-powered Bing Chat. The App Store description of ChatGPT also emphasizes its ad-free nature, along with features like history syncing and access to the latest OpenAI models. Interestingly, Google recently introduced its own AI chatbot called Bard, which became available in English shortly before the launch of ChatGPT’s mobile app.

Research conducted by data.ai, an app store intelligence provider, shows that there is consumer demand for AI apps like ChatGPT on the iPhone. The top 10 mobile AI apps have already generated more than $14 million in consumer spending in 2023, as of late March. Consumer spending on AI apps has increased by 11% on average compared to February.

Android Smartphone Transforms into Dashcam: A Convenient and Practical Feature Coming Soon

0

Recent reports indicate that the police are encouraging the use of dashcams by the public, as they can greatly aid in investigating traffic incidents. The Royal Malaysia Police even took to Facebook to gather opinions on the matter. If you’re considering purchasing a dashcam, it’s worth checking if you have a spare device that could serve the purpose in the near future. An upcoming update to Google’s Personal Safety app is set to allow smartphones to function as dashcams. The app, which houses various safety features like Emergency Sharing, Car Crash Detection, and Safety Check, is available on Google Pixel devices and certain other Android smartphones. It has been observed to work on devices such as the Asus ROG Phone 7, implying that Personal Safety is supported on smartphones running a stock-like version of Android. This development offers the potential for repurposing existing smartphones as dashcams, providing a convenient and cost-effective solution.

Google accidentally released an early build of the upcoming version of their Personal Safety app on the Play Store, and users discovered a new feature called Dashcam. This feature allows you to use your phone as a recording device while driving, capturing video and audio. To utilize it, you’ll need to securely mount your phone on your car’s dashboard. Interestingly, it was found that you can still use your phone for navigation with Google Maps while recording video, and you can even conserve battery life by turning off the screen.

In this early build, the Dashcam feature can automatically start when you connect your phone to your car’s stereo and infotainment system via Bluetooth, and it will stop recording when disconnected. To save storage space, all recordings are set to be deleted after three days. Additionally, each video is compressed to a size of around 30MB per minute, with a maximum recording length of 24 hours. These details indicate that Google is actively working on incorporating Dashcam functionality into their Personal Safety app, providing users with a convenient and integrated solution for recording their driving experiences.

Using your phone as a dashcam may raise concerns about overheating when it is exposed to sunlight while recording video and performing navigation tasks. It would be beneficial if the Personal Safety app offered the option to use the ultrawide lens for a wider recording angle. However, if you have a compatible smartphone, either as your primary or secondary device, it can be a convenient solution for recording while driving. We need to wait for the full release of the feature within the Personal Safety app, but it appears that it won’t be limited to Pixel devices only, which is a positive aspect.

Apple’s App Store Triumph: Halting Over RM9 Billion in Fraud and Battling Third-Party Store Menace

0

Apple stopped fraudulent transactions worth USD 2.09 billion (around RM9.4 billion) on its App Store last year. It also removed nearly 1.7 million app submissions for not meeting its privacy, security, and content standards. Apple criticized third-party app stores, calling them “illegitimate storefronts” that lack privacy and security protections. It claimed to have protected users from nearly 57,000 untrustworthy apps found on these unauthorized marketplaces. These apps can imitate or modify popular apps without the developers’ permission and may distribute harmful software.

Apple took action against potentially fraudulent activity by terminating over 428,000 developer accounts. This is a significant decrease from the previous year due to improved methods for preventing the creation of fraudulent accounts. They also rejected around 105,000 enrolments in the Apple Developer Programme for suspicious activities, preventing bad actors from submitting apps. Additionally, Apple blocked nearly 3.9 million attempts to launch or install illicit apps through the Developer Enterprise Programme, meant for internal app deployment within large organizations. They disabled over 282 million customer accounts linked to fraudulent and abusive behavior and blocked the creation of 198 million fraudulent new customer accounts.

Apple emphasized its app review process, which involves multiple safety checks. This includes using Xcode developer software to ensure apps comply with authorized technologies and minimum requirements. App Store Connect is used to identify known malware and references to private APIs, and the App Review team conducts a thorough inspection of each app. Apple has rejected apps this year for privacy and security reasons, such as the use of malicious code that could steal user credentials and apps disguised as financial management platforms. They also rejected apps for being spam, copycats, misleading, containing hidden features, or attempting to collect personal data without user consent.

Apple stated that its App Review team investigates apps reported through the “Report a Problem” tool and takes action by removing fraudulent and malicious apps. They also automatically remove unapproved apps from developer accounts terminated for fraud and abuse to prevent their submission to the App Store. Apple has removed more than 147 million potentially misleading app ratings and reviews that came from fraudulent or bot accounts. Additionally, they have helped credit card fraud victims by blocking almost 3.9 million stolen credit cards in the previous year.

Apple is facing pressure from the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to promote open markets in Europe and will take effect on March 6 next year. As a result, Apple may be required to make significant changes to its products. These changes include allowing the installation of third-party app stores and sideloading on its devices. Additionally, Apple may have to open up access to features like Find My, NFC chip, cameras, default web browser settings, and more to rival companies. The regulatory pressure has already led Apple to plan one major change for the iPhone—the addition of a USB-C port.

Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Proposes Special Number Plates for EVs in Malaysia

0

Minister of Transport Anthony Loke has announced plans to revamp the road tax structure for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. The Ministry is also exploring additional incentives to encourage the public to purchase EVs. One proposed incentive is the introduction of special number plates for EVs, which would distinguish them from other vehicles on the road. Loke believes these measures will help promote the adoption of EVs in the country. He shared these plans during the Green Mobility and Transport Forum.

The proposal for special number plates for EVs in Malaysia could involve creating a new series of plates dedicated to EVs, similar to Singapore’s “EVS” series. Another option is to add a specific letter at the front or back of the existing number plates, similar to the practice in Germany. Alternatively, Malaysia may consider introducing special green plates, like the ones used in China and the UK, to distinguish EVs on the road. These different approaches aim to visually differentiate EVs and raise awareness about their presence.

The mention of “e-plates” by Minister Loke suggests the possibility of using a different type of number plate technology specifically designed for EVs. One futuristic idea could involve digital displays on the plates to show vehicle registration, but this technology is not yet feasible. A more practical interpretation would be the use of “digital number plates” with embedded RFID tags. These RFID tags could facilitate vehicle tracking for law enforcement and potentially enable toll payments. Malaysia is planning to implement barrier-less tolls using RFID technology in 2025, which aligns with the potential use of such digital number plates.

Specialized number plates for EVs would facilitate better enforcement of EV-specific benefits, such as reserved parking spaces with charging facilities. By quickly identifying EVs through special plates, parking operators can prevent non-EVs from occupying these spaces. Minister Loke mentioned that the Ministry of Transport (MOT) aims to announce the details of these incentives, including the new EV road tax structure, by the end of the year. The announcement will provide more information on how the incentives and the specialized number plates will be implemented in Malaysia.

Beware: Mobile Malware Rides the AI Wave on Google Play and Apple App Store

0

Recently, generative AI and chatbots have become popular in the tech industry. Unfortunately, malware makers have taken advantage of this trend and infiltrated both the Google Play and Apple App Store. According to Sophos, a cybersecurity company, there has been an increase in mobile apps on these platforms that falsely claim to connect users to the AI chatbot ChatGPT by Open AI. While the original ChatGPT is free, these deceptive apps offer a free trial and then try to charge exorbitant subscription fees. This type of mobile malware has been categorized as “fleeceware” due to its deceptive behavior.

Fleeceware, the type of mobile malware discussed, is not a new phenomenon and has been around since 2020. Examples of fleeceware include services that can be obtained for free or at a very low cost, such as QR and barcode readers. Google and Apple introduced guidelines in the past to combat fleece are in their app stores. However, fleeceware has evolved over time, not only charging high subscription fees but also limiting functionality if users refuse to pay. Unlike ransomware, fleeceware doesn’t directly extort money or access sensitive data, which makes it harder to detect and recognize as a threat.

If you’re interested in exploring generative AI, there are three options available for free and easy access. One option is OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as mentioned earlier. Microsoft’s Bing AI and Google’s Bard are the other two avenues, both of which have recently become accessible without requiring signup. These platforms provide opportunities for users to engage with generative AI and have fun exploring its capabilities

MediaTek Rumored to Collaborate with NVIDIA for New Chipsets with Enhanced AI and Gaming Capabilities” Rumors suggest that MediaTek and NVIDIA have partnered to develop chipsets incorporating NVIDIA’s GPU technology. The collaboration aims to improve AI and gaming features in MediaTek’s future chips for mobile devices and laptops, especially Windows on ARM (WOA) devices. According to reports, development for these chipsets is anticipated to commence in 2024.

MediaTek and NVIDIA’s collaboration on a WOA chipset aims to enter the midrange to the high-end laptop market. Currently, MediaTek focuses on supplying entry-level Chromebooks, holding a reported 20% market share. WOA uses ARM’s processor architecture, different from the x86 standard used in most laptops and desktop PCs. Qualcomm is currently the only SoC vendor offering WOA chipsets, but if the rumor is true, both MediaTek and NVIDIA will challenge Qualcomm’s position in this category.

The rumor contradicts NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s previous statement about not developing mobile GPUs or ray-tracing technology. NVIDIA’s contributions to the mobile scene have been limited, with its Tegra chipsets used in the SHIELD product line and Nintendo Switch consoles. The company has not released its graphics acceleration technology for smartphones or tablets yet, but the rumor suggests that this might change. Samsung and AMD should also take note of this potential development.
