Unleashing the Power of AI: Google I/O 2023 Presents New Ways to Make Technology Helpful for All

In Gmail, Google has introduced a feature called “Help me write” to make writing emails easier. This feature uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to generate full email drafts based on a prompt. For example, if your flight is canceled and you want a refund instead of a voucher, you can use “Help me write” to create an email requesting a full refund. The feature pulls in relevant information from previous emails, like flight details, to make the draft more accurate. As part of Google’s Workspace updates, “Help me write” will be gradually rolled out. Similar to the Smart Compose feature, “Help me write” will improve over time with more usage and feedback.

Google Maps is introducing a new feature called Immersive View for routes. This feature uses AI to create a detailed representation of a place you want to visit. Now, you can use Immersive View to see your entire trip in advance, whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving. For example, if you’re in New York City and want to go on a bike ride, you can use Immersive View to get a bird’s eye view of the route before deciding. Immersive View also provides additional information like air quality, traffic, and weather for your journey. The feature will start rolling out during the summer and will be available in

Google Photos is getting a new feature called Magic Editor. This feature uses AI to help you improve your photos. One example is the Magic Eraser, which removes unwanted distractions from your photos using AI. Another upcoming feature is Magic Editor, which combines semantic understanding and generative AI to do even more with your photos. For instance, you can reposition subjects in the photo, recreate missing parts, and adjust the lighting to make your photos look better. Magic Editor will be available in Google Photos later this year.

AI is being used in various Google products like Gmail, Photos, and Maps to help users in important moments. Google has 15 products with over half a billion users each, and six of them have over 2 billion users. Google’s mission is to organize information and make it accessible and useful for everyone. Google is introducing PaLM 2, its latest production model for AI. PaLM 2 is capable of performing a wide range of tasks and is easy to deploy. It offers excellent foundational capabilities across different sizes and is trained in multiple languages. PaLm 2 can help developers collaborate and assist with tasks like code debugging and adding comments in different languages. It can also be fine-tuned for specialized domains, such as security (Sec-PaLM) and medicine (Med-PaLM 2). Med-PaLM 2 achieved expert-level performance on medical licensing exam-style questions. Google is also working on adding capabilities to Med-PaLM 2 for synthesizing information from medical imaging. PaLm 2 is now available in preview and represents Google’s commitment to responsible AI. Google has merged its research team, Brain Team.

Google has made updates to Bard, its conversational AI experiment, making it smarter and supporting a wide range of programming capabilities. New features have been added to Google Workspace, such as Duet AI for generating images from text descriptions and creating custom plans. Google is introducing Labs, a way for users to preview upcoming features and provide feedback. The first experience in Labs involves Google Search, where advancements in AI have improved language understanding and visual search capabilities. Google is exploring the use of generative AI to transform Search and provide more helpful experiences. Google is committed to responsible innovation and maintaining high-quality information in Search. They are making it easier for businesses and organizations to innovate with AI by providing advanced computing infrastructure and access to Google’s foundation models. Google Cloud is also working on providing tools for customers to train and run their own models with safety and privacy in mind.

Google is using AI advancements to enhance the personalization of Android devices, with features like Magic Compose and Cinematic Wallpapers. They are introducing new Pixel devices, including the Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet, which are powered by AI and available for purchase or pre-order. Google believes that AI is a major technological shift and is committed to making it helpful for everyone. They approach AI boldly and responsibly, with a focus on getting it right.
